Ten Central Trade Unions Back UFBU’s Bank Strike Call: What It Means for Bank Employees and Customers

Bank employees across India are gearing up for a season of protests, and now they have some heavyweight backing. In a letter dated 29th August 2026, ten Central Trade Unions of the country have formally extended their support to the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) — the joint platform of major bank employee and officer associations — for its planned strike programme in the coming months.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what’s happening, why it matters, and what dates you need to mark on your calendar.

Who Is Involved?

The letter of solidarity has been jointly issued by ten Central Trade Unions:

Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC)
All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC)
Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS)
Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU)
All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC)
Trade Union Co-ordination Centre (TUCC)
Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA)
All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU)
Labour Progressive Federation (LPF)
United Trade Union Centre (UTUC)

It has been addressed to the United Forum of Bank Unions, an umbrella body of bank unions comprising AIBEA, AIBOC, NCBE, AIBOA, BEFI, INBEF, and INBOC.

What Are Bank Employees Demanding?

According to the letter, two core issues are driving the agitation:

1. A Five-Day Work Week Bank unions have long been pushing for a five-day working week for the banking sector. As part of the negotiation, unions had reportedly proposed in 2024 that the working hours saved by dropping a working day could be redistributed across the remaining days of the week. This proposal, the letter notes, is still awaiting a decision from the Government.

2. A Fair, Non-Discriminatory Incentive Scheme The second major sticking point is the incentive scheme for bank staff. Back in 2020, an agreement was reportedly reached to pay incentives uniformly across a bank — ranging from 5 to 15 days’ wages depending on that bank’s overall profitability. The unions claim this agreement has not been honoured. Instead, a revised scheme has been introduced that links incentives to individual employee performance rather than the bank’s collective performance — a move the unions argue creates unfair divisions within the workforce.

The Strike Calendar

Citing these unresolved issues, UFBU has announced a phased agitation programme, and the ten Central Trade Unions have pledged their full solidarity with it. Here are the key dates:

Date Action

11th September 2026 All India All Banks Strike
28th, 29th & 30th September 2026 All India All Banks Strike
From 26th October 2026 Indefinite Strike

Why This Matters

When bank unions and Central Trade Unions come together like this, it usually signals that the standoff has reached a serious stage. For bank customers, strike days can mean disruptions to branch banking, cheque clearance, and certain over-the-counter services, even though ATM and digital banking services are typically less affected.

For employees, this show of unity across ten different trade union federations — cutting across ideological lines — adds significant pressure on both the Government and bank managements to revisit the pending five-day week proposal and rework the incentive scheme.

With strikes scheduled through September and an indefinite strike looming from late October, all eyes will now be on whether the Government and bank managements re-engage with UFBU before the situation escalates further. We’ll keep tracking this story and update you as more developments unfold.
