Sonali Sen Gupta has been promoted to the position of Executive Director (ED) at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), with her appointment becoming effective from October 9, 2025. Before this promotion, Sen Gupta was the RBI’s Regional Director in Karnataka, based in Bengaluru.
The Executive Director is a high-ranking official at the RBI, just below the Deputy Governors. According to the RBI, she has played a major role in promoting financial education and protecting consumers.
In her new role, she will be in charge of three major departments:

Consumer Education and Protection – helping people understand banking better and protecting their rights.

Financial Inclusion and Development – making banking and financial services more accessible to everyone.

Inspection – checking how well banks are following rules and regulations.
Sonali Sen Gupta Qualifications:

She has a postgraduate degree and an MBA in Banking and Finance.

She is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF).
Sonali Sen Gupta professional Experience:
- Sen Gupta has worked at the RBI for over 30 years, which implies deep institutional knowledge and experience.
- She was also a board member of the National Centre for Financial Education (NCFE).
- She has represented India and the RBI in global financial meetings like the G20 and OECD.
Sonali Sen Gupta is a highly experienced RBI official who has now taken on an even bigger leadership role, where she will be responsible for improving consumer awareness, promoting financial access, and ensuring proper oversight of banks.
