The CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) has arrested two bank employees for helping cybercriminals commit online fraud. They helped cybercriminals open and run fake accounts to move stolen money, took bribes for it, and taught criminals how to avoid getting caught.

The two accused are Shalini Sinha, an Assistant Manager at Canara Bank, and Abhishek Kumar, a Business Development Associate at Axis Bank. Both were working in Patna at the time of the alleged offence. Shalini Sinha was arrested in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, while Abhishek Kumar was arrested in Bettiah, Bihar.

How the Fraud Was Carried Out?

The accused allegedly helped in opening “mule accounts,” which are bank accounts commonly used by criminals to transfer and conceal stolen money. These accounts were used to move funds obtained through online scams and cyber frauds. Investigations reveal that the bank officials’ role went beyond merely opening the accounts. They allegedly guided cybercriminals on how to operate the accounts, explained methods to evade bank monitoring systems and warning signals (red flags), and accepted bribes as a quid pro quo (something in return) for providing such assistance.

CBI investigated cybercrime cases. They checked digital devices and transaction data. CBI conducted searches at 61 places across India. Arrested 13 people and filed charge sheets against them.

Based on such evidence, they also found these officials were actively involved. The CBI arrested them and is still investigating others involved.
