Bank Unions to Join Nationwide Strike (Bharat Bandh) on July 9

On July 9, A nationwide strike has been called by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions, who are unhappy with the government’s economic reforms, which they say support big companies and are unfair to workers. Over 25 crore (250 million) workers from different industries are expected to participate in this strike.

The Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association announced that the banking sector will also take part in the strike. Major bank unions like AIBEA (All India Bank Employees Association), AIBOA, and BEFI have decided to join.

Why the Unions Are Striking?

Trade unions allege that their concerns have been repeatedly overlooked. Despite submitting a 17-point charter of demands to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya last year, they claim no meaningful action has been taken.

Issues and Demand Behind the Bharat Bandh:

  • They oppose the new labor law reforms, which are widely viewed as anti-worker

  • Protest against privatization of public sector units and contract jobs.

  • Rising rural economic distress and corporate control over agriculture

  • Demands for minimum support prices (MSP) and stronger social security systems.

  • Farmers and rural workers are also protesting high prices, unemployment, and reduced government spending on health and education.

Who will be affected by the strike?

  • People from factories, banks, transport services, coal mines, and postal departments will be joining the strike, so slowdowns or closures expected in these sectors.
  • Bank unions haven’t confirmed a full shutdown, but expect delays in some places. Services like cheque clearances, customer service, and branch operations might be affected in public sector and cooperative banks.
  • Schools will mostly stay open, but students and workers may face transport issues due to road blockades especially in cities.

This strike is expected to be large and widespread, affecting both cities and villages. Public may expect disruptions in banking, transportation, and other essential services. Its best for travelers and commuters should plan ahead, check for updates, and expect possible delays or cancellations.
