Towards Australia’s net zero transition, the Australian Government is supporting methane abatement technologies. By investing in the Resources Methane Abatement Fund, the funds will be used to combat methane emissions from coal mines. A significant part of Australia’s transition to net zero is reducing emissions from the resources sector.

Moreover, it affirms our dedication to the:

  • Safeguard Mechanism
  • Global Methane Pledge

Funding will be provided for two initiatives:

  • $2.3 million for the University of Newcastle to conduct research and design towards the scaleup of a catalytic methane mitigation unit.
  • $2.05 million for CSIRO to conduct optimisation and site trials of the catalytic Ventilation Air Methane mitigator (VAMMIT)

In addition to making mining safer for underground workers, the projects will also enhance commercial viability.
