SBI has over 2.4 lakh (240,000) employees, one of the largest in India and the biggest in the banking sector. And now SBI wants to increase the number of women employees to 30% of its total workforce within the next five years. Right now, women make up 27% of the total staff, and 33% of the front-line staff.
This focus on gender diversity is part of SBI’s broader initiative to make the workplace more inclusive and balanced. To achieve this, the bank is launching programs to support women employees, such as:
-
SBI provides creche allowances for working mothers.
-
Family connect programmes to support work-life balance.
-
Training for women returning from maternity leave or long breaks.
-
The ‘Empower Her’ programme helps identify and mentor women for leadership roles, preparing them for senior positions in the future.
The bank is taking steps to help more women grow in their careers and take leadership positions. At the same time, SBI is also planning to hire about 3,500 officers to strengthen its services and operations across India.
SBI has already hired 505 Probationary Officers (POs) in June. It is now in the process of filling another 541 PO positions. About 1,300 specialist officers have been recruited to handle IT and cybersecurity work. And around 3,000 circle-based officers (local officers) are also being considered, and this should be completed by the end of the financial year.
SBI plans to hire around 18,000 people in total this year. Out of these, about 13,500 will be for clerical job (junior associates) and the rest will be officers (POs and circle-based officers).
The State Bank of India (SBI), which is the country’s largest public-sector bank plan combines recruitment expansion with a strong diversity and inclusion goal, ensuring not only that the bank grows in size, but also that it becomes a more equitable and supportive workplace for women.
