New Income Tax Forms for 2026 Announced; Income Tax Act, 2025 to Replace 1961 Law from April 1

India is set to undergo a major transformation in its tax system after more than 60 years. The country is introducing a completely new income tax system to replace the old one. The current Income Tax Act, 1961 will be replaced by the Income Tax Act, 2025, which means the rules for paying taxes will be updated and simplified. These changes have been introduced by the Central Board of Direct Taxes, which manages tax laws in India. The new system will come into effect from 1 April 2026 and will apply to the tax year 2026–27 onwards, so taxpayers will need to follow the new rules starting from that period.

The applicable income tax forms depend on the period in which the income is earned. For income earned before 1 April 2026 (i.e., FY 2025–26 and earlier), the existing income tax forms under the current rules will continue to be used. For income earned on or after 1 April 2026, the new income tax forms introduced under the updated rules will apply.

The new tax system includes more than 190 forms, but there’s no need to worry because most of them are meant for businesses, international transactions, research institutions, and tax authorities. For common taxpayers like students and salaried individuals, only a few important forms will be used, such as Form 130 for salary details, Form 168 for tax-related information, and the ITR forms for filing income tax returns.

Key Changes in Income Tax Forms:

  • Form 16 → Form 130
The salary TDS certificate has just been renamed. Its purpose remains the same, but with a new form number.
  • Form 26AS → Form 168
serves as the tax statement (which shows TDS, tax paid, eand other related tax information under the new system) now comes under a new form number.
  • Form 15G + Form 15H → Form 121
Earlier, there were two separate forms for different age groups. Now, both are combined into one single form to make things simpler.
  • Forms 3CA, 3CB, 3CD → Form 26
Instead of multiple audit forms, there is now just one single audit form.
  • Overall benefit 👍
Fewer forms mean less confusion, less paperwork, and an easier tax filing process for everyone.

This major change has been introduced to make the tax system simpler and more efficient for everyone. The government aims to simplify the process of filing taxes, standardize the format of forms, and reduce the overall number of forms by merging similar ones. These steps are intended to make compliance easier for taxpayers while also modernizing the entire tax system to make it more streamlined and user-friendly.

The Income Tax Department has also released FAQs and detailed guidance notes to help people understand the new tax forms and rules more easily. These resources are available on the official portal, making it simpler for taxpayers to find answers to common questions and get clear instructions while dealing with the new system.
