A nationwide bank strike has been planned for February 12, 2026. To support this nationwide strike, major banks like State Bank of India (SBI) and IDBI Bank have warned customers that some banking services may be affected, though only to a limited extent. Banks will remain open because February 12 is not a bank holiday, but work at branches may be slower if many employees join the strike.
The strike is being called by big bank unions such as AIBEA, AIBOA, and BEFI, along with other central trade unions. They are protesting against the new labour laws introduced by the government, saying these laws reduce workers’ rights and make it harder for unions to function. Bank employees are also demanding better work-life balance and a five-day work week.
According to a PTI report, trade unions say that about 30 crore (300 million) workers from different sectors across the country will take part in the protest. The strike was announced on January 9 by several trade unions to protest against what they call anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate policies of the central government.
All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) General Secretary Amarjeet Kaur said that because of the nationwide strike on February 12, many services like electricity, banking, insurance, transport, health, education, gas, and water supply may be affected. She also clarified that not all bank unions will participate, since their joint forum had already gone on strike on January 27.
Branch services like cash withdrawals, cheque clearing, and customer help may face delays. However, digital services such as mobile banking, internet banking, and ATMs are expected to work normally. However, the disruption is expected to be limited, meaning basic services may continue, but customers could face delays or reduced availability at branches. Customers are advised to plan important banking work in advance to avoid inconvenience.
