For the first time in India, professionals from private banks are now allowed to apply for top leadership positions in government-owned banks. This includes high-level roles such as the Managing Director (MD) of the State Bank of India (SBI), as well as positions like Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Whole-Time Director (WTD) in other Public Sector Banks (PSBs). This move marks a major shift in policy, opening up public banking leadership to experienced talent from the private sector.
private-sector professionals can apply for the top position, if they meet certain qualifications.
To be eligible, candidates must have:
-
At least 21 years of total work experience.
-
At least 15 years in the banking sector specially.
- Held a position at board level for at least 2 years, or at the next-highest level below the board for at least 3 years.
Internal Public Sector Banks (PSB) candidates (i.e. from within public sector banks) like: Deputy Managing Directors (DMDs), Executive Directors (EDs), Current MD & CEOs of other banks can also apply, as long as they meet tenure and experience criteria.
How are candidates selected?
-
Selection is done by the Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB).
- FSIB can now hire independent HR agencies to conduct preliminary assessments of Behavioral traits and Competencies (skills, leadership, etc.)
-
Selection will not be based on APARs (Annual Performance Appraisal Reports) and will focus on live interviews and candidate performance during the FSIB interaction.
-
All candidates must obtain clearances from RBI (for banking suitability) and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) (for integrity, in the case of public officers).
Why Is This Important?
The government’s goal is to:
- Attract top talent from both public and private sectors.
-
Improve transparency in how top banking leaders are chosen.
-
Encourage merit-based competition, leading to better leadership in public financial institutions.
This is a major reform in how India’s public sector banks are led. The Indian government has opened the doors for private bank professionals to lead government banks. This is a big step toward hiring based on merit and improving leadership in public financial institutions. The Tenure, salary, retirement age, etc. will follow The SBI Act, 1955 and The Nationalised Banks (Management and Miscellaneous Provisions) Scheme.
