The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has streamlined FASTag issuance for private vehicles starting February 1, 2026, eliminating post-activation KYC hurdles. Banks now verify vehicle details upfront using the VAHAN portal, easing toll plaza delays for millions of users.
Major Rule Changes
No Separate KYV Process: New FASTags for cars, jeeps, and vans skip the “Know Your Vehicle” verification after issuance; all checks happen at activation via Registration Certificate (RC) and VAHAN database.
Banks Take Full Responsibility: Issuing banks must cross-check vehicle data before activating tags, preventing mismatches, fraud, or incorrect issuances upfront.
Routine KYC Eliminated: Existing FASTags for private cars require no mandatory updates unless complaints arise, like loose tags, misuse, or wrong vehicle mapping.
Benefits for Users
Reduced Toll Delays: Ends frustrations from “KYC pending” beeps at plazas despite valid balances and documents, speeding up highway travel.
Less Paperwork: Vehicle owners avoid repeated document submissions, photo uploads, or bank calls post-purchase.
Applies Only to Private Vehicles: Commercial vehicles (buses, trucks) retain existing KYC rules; change targets everyday commuters.
What Remains Unchanged
Current FASTag holders continue without action if no issues; maintain linked mobile numbers and balances.
Verification triggers persist for complaints or suspected fraud to ensure system integrity.
