UPI Gets an Update: New Rules Come Into Effect from August 1, 2025

From 1 August 2025, new rules for the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have officially come into effect. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has made new rules to improve how UPI works, making it faster, smoother, more reliable and protect users from fraud. These changes will apply to all UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm,  or any other UPI-based app

Highlights of the Latest UPI Rules

  • Now a user can check bank balance only up to 50 times a day using UPI apps. Earlier there was no limit. UPI apps may block or delay balance checks during busy hours to avoid system overload.
  • After every UPI transaction users can see their updated bank balance automatically. It will help to keep track of money.
  • Users can now check the status of a pending transaction only 3 times, and each attempt must be spaced at least 90 seconds apart. Additionally, auto payment such as subscriptions or recurring bills will now be processed only during non-peak hours i.e.✅ Before 10 AM, ✅ Between 1 PM and 5 PM, ✅ After 9:30 PM.
  • If an auto payment is scheduled during peak hours, it will be processed before or after that time. In cases where an autopayment fails, the UPI app will automatically retry the transaction. However, if it fails again, the payment will be cancelled altogether. This is to reduce traffic during busy hours and avoid delays.
  • Users can see the list of banks linked to your mobile number, but only 25 times per day. To check this, users need to select their bank manually in the app.
  • There is no change in daily transaction limits. Users can still do up to 20 UPI transactions per day and the total daily limit remains ₹1 lakh.
  • For new users who have just started using UPI, most banks will allow only up to ₹5,000 per transaction and ₹5,000 total in the first 24 hours.

These changes have been made by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to make the online payment system better, safer and make UPI work more smoothly for everyone.. If UPI apps don’t follow these rules, NPCI can take action, like Blocking their access to UPI systems, Imposing fines and Stopping them from onboarding new users.
